In August, U.S. job openings rose above expectations by 690,000 to 9.6 million. Hires and total separations changed little during the month, as the job market remained strong. Openings for professional and business services jobs rose 509,000 and provided most of the move. The number of voluntary separations rose in accommodation and food services and fell in information jobs. Mortgage rates continue to rise following FOMC member comments indicating there could be another rate hike and that rates will remain elevated for an extended period.
